Les Baux de Provence is more than just another Provencal village, it is a remarkable site where nature and human architecture seem to blend in together perfectly. When arriving to les Baux de Provence by the Sarragan road, this feeling of unity is particularly amazing. The first glance at "Les Baux de Provence" is breathtaking. The village architecture blends in perfectly with the surrounding landscape. Clinging to the rock, the magnificent village of "les Baux de Provence" is on top of a mineral world, made of grottoes and rock anfractuosities formed by erosion. It is here that you will discover the story of "stones" in Provence. In Provence, stones are part of the landscape. You will find limestone all through the Alpilles, this small mountain range where the Baux de Provence lays. The Alpille's limestone is shining white and reflects a blinding light during the summer. This color sharply contrasts with the dark green of the cypress trees, the black and tortuous trunks of the almond trees and the tender greyish green of the olive trees. The Alpille's limestone is tender and men used to carve it into underground dwellings. It was also used during Antiquity to build monuments that you can still see in Arles. Today, this limestone is still used as construction, decoration and sculpting material. Some of the excavation sites have now started a second life: a wine cave, a gigantic sound and color show and more recently a gorgeous setting for exceptional events and receptions.
